BYG part 1

BYG Label Listing by Lukas H. Lindenmaier (part 1)

(some small additions and corrections plus addition of covers by Michael Frohne)

The label byg-actuel was founded in summer 1969 in Paris (F) by drummer/musicologist Jacques Delcloo and photographer Jacques Biscglia. Jean Georgakarakos acted as a business director for the company, Jean-Luc Young as something like an A&R manager and co-producer for the byg-actuel series; most issues are signed as "produced by Jean Georgakarakos & Jean-Luc Young". The company was active recording in Paris studios as well as other venues from summer 1969 on until late 1970. These recordings were released in an almost uniform package design in a series originaly numbered 529.301 - 529.352.

Byg also had another series on the European market, without the "actuel"-suffix, and in a quite different package design, mostly dealing with reissues from the American Savoy catalogue as well as other historical jazz recordings. The company output also included a series of low-priced albums on the "Monkey" sub-label, and sampler compilations under the "byg", byg-actuel, or "Monkey" flags.

The records - all in 12" vinyl format - were on the regular market from fall 1969 on until around 1972, when they became bargain items in the cutout bins. Some of the byg-actuel albums also appeared in European (mostly French and German) Metronome catalogues. In the later 70's some of the byg-actuel albums have been reissued in Japan, mostly by the Toho Co. The Japanese Byg series also included originals or reissues from sources other than the byg-actuel series; these recordings are not included in the following listing.

Part of the byg-actuel catalogue has been reproduced in the 80's by Affinity, a sub of the British Charly-Records-Co.; most of these remain available in the contemporary CD format.

Rather than discussing the copyright situation or commercial fairness of byg-actuel and subsequent productions, this present publication is about to document an important chapter of recorded activities by Afro-American and European artists in the so-called "Free Jazz Scene" of the late 60's: actuel was avant-garde at the time - history today.

The following listing is the reproduction of a first draft typoscript. The author welcomes all corrections and additions concerning session information and/or issues.

Information as reported is drawn from original liner notes and labels. Details have been added or corrected upon audition. Obvious misspellings in the originals have been corrected wthout further notice. The name of the sound engineer at Saravah studios appears in various spellings (Vallancien, Valancien, Valencien etc.) in the original liner notes and is now adapted to "Daniel Valencien" throughout.

compiled by H.L.Lindenmaier / D-79098 Freiburg

Addition information:

The discography is not at all obsolete. But since the first issue many re-issues on CD, high quality LPs and CDs as well as bootlegs in various forms swamp the market.

Sadly my good friend Lukas died in 2014. Due to his illness there was no time to include all editions.

Issues:

529.308 BURTON GREENE - AQUARIANA

Notes: (1) not mentioned in liner notes, definitely audible in track A1.
(2) instrumentation for Burton Greene incomplete in liner notes; most probably he is the vocalist audible in A1.

Issues: 529.322 KENNETH TERROADE - LOVE REJOICE

Notes: (1) a piccolo-fl audible in both A1 and B1 is played by either one of the flutists.
(2) Jean-Max Michel's liner notes state "... compositions by Terroade and Beer ..." as basic material for this session. Since "Love Rejoice" is a Terroade original, "Blessing" might in fact be a Beer original, or another, third (unknown and unissued) composition, Beer original, has been recorded on this date.

JACQUES COURSIL - BLACK SUITE 69-0610B

(2) on Affinity(GB)CDAFF752 "The Waltz" is replaced by "Hey Friend (Mitchell)" (6:00). "..."The Waltz" is indeed missing from CD AFF 752 because our master of The Waltz was of inferior quality for reproduction on CD. "Hey Friend" is from the same session date as "A Jackson In Your House"..."

- Joop Visser, Charly Records Ltd., 25.9.1990. In fact, "Hey Friend" has nothing to do with this session; the track as released on Affinity(GB)CDAFF752 obviously is from an unidentified concert recording, most probably late 1969, or 1970.
(3) B1 and B2 appear as one continuous track on all issues.
